On April 28, 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, securing its place in the foundation of a new republic. But Maryland’s story begins long before that pivotal moment. From the thriving Indigenous communities who first called the Chesapeake home, to its founding as a Catholic refuge, to its role in revolution, civil war, and the fight for civil rights, Maryland’s history is one of contrasts—idealism and conflict, prosperity and struggle, tradition and reinvention.

In this episode, we trace Maryland’s journey across four centuries, exploring how a colony built on religious tolerance became a border state divided by war, an industrial powerhouse, and today, a dynamic hub of culture, science, and politics. Along the way, we’ll uncover fascinating details you might not know: Maryland’s official state sport is jousting, the Ouija Board was invented in Baltimore, and for one day in 1814, a small Maryland town served as the nation’s capital.

Known as “America in Miniature” for its incredible geographic and cultural diversity, Maryland reflects the larger American story—resilient, complex, and always evolving.
