Info On The Go
Vikings
The Vikings were seafaring people from Scandinavia—modern-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—who lived during the Viking Age, roughly from the late 8th to the 11th centuries. Known for their exploration, raiding, trading, and settlement across Europe and beyond, they reached as far as North Africa, the Middle East, and even North America, where they established a short-lived settlement in Vinland (modern-day Newfoundland). Though often remembered as fierce warriors, Vikings were also farmers, craftsmen, and traders who spoke Old Norse, the ancestor of modern North Germanic languages. They used runes for writing and followed a polytheistic religion centered around gods like Odin, Thor, and Freyja. Viking society was complex, with a structured social hierarchy and a rich culture reflected in their myths, shipbuilding, and burial practices. Their famous longships enabled them to travel great distances, leading to vast trade networks and cultural exchanges. The Viking Age began dramatically with the raid on the monastery at Lindisfarne in 793 CE and gradually declined as Scandinavia embraced Christianity, formed centralized kingdoms, and integrated into the broader European world. Despite their eventual transformation, the Vikings left a lasting legacy of innovation, exploration, and influence.
