Managing pests in your garden while keeping bees safe (A Dash of Info)
Managing Garden Pests While Protecting Bees
Maintain a healthy, pollinator-friendly garden by using safe pest control methods such as insecticidal soap, diatomaceous earth, neem oil, and Spinosad. These natural solutions effectively target pests while minimizing harm to bees and other beneficial insects.
- Insecticidal Soap: Kills soft-bodied pests on contact without systemic absorption. Avoid spraying blooms to protect pollinators.
- Diatomaceous Earth: A non-toxic powder that dehydrates pests. Apply sparingly and away from flowers to prevent bee exposure.
- Neem Oil: Disrupts pests’ growth and feeding cycles while breaking down quickly in the environment. Use in the early morning or late evening to avoid impacting bees.
- Spinosad: A naturally derived insecticide with minimal effect on pollinators when applied outside their active foraging times.
For a chemical-free approach, strong water sprays, horticultural oils, and homemade solutions like soapy water or garlic-onion sprays can be effective. Always apply pest control methods carefully, targeting infested areas while keeping flowers safe to ensure a thriving ecosystem for both plants and pollinators.
